I’ve always been a worrier. Thankfully, I have learned some techniques that are wonderful treatments for anxiety, and have helped enormously for overcoming anxiety in my own life.
#1. – Confront Your Problems Head-On
Want anxiety relief when there are real problems? Confront them head-on. When I had to confront my business partner about some of his destructive behaviors, I was filled with anxiety. I worried about it for weeks. I finally just walked into his office and said “We need to Talk”. It was really a great conversation and he was open to what I had to say. We eventually came to an agreement. And Lo and Behold – my anxiety was gone. In fact, my anxiety dissipated as soon as I knocked on his door, BEFORE the resolution.
#2 – Make A Decision
A sure way of overcoming anxiety about an unresolved issue is to just make a decision. Even if it is a bad decision. Making a bad decision is better than doing nothing. You may immediately resolve the anxiety when you finally decide to quit that job, buy that car, or make that phone call. Nothing can amp up anxiety quite so much as decisions waiting to be made. The best treatments for anxiety is to just make the decisions. If they prove to be bad decisions, just make new ones.
#3 – Take Action
Action towards a goal is a great way of overcoming anxiety. Thinking too much about a goal, especially if you dwell on the potential problems, will cause you worry and stress. Certainly you should plan well, but when planning drifts towards worrying, start doing something positive. Taking an action is a wonderful anxiety treatment, because it is movement toward resolution.
#4 – If there is too much whirling around in my head, I put them on lists and feel better. Write down that home improvement you’ve been meaning to finish on a list, and you’ll feel less worried now. You’re creating “mental categories.” Just telling yourself, “There is nothing I can do about this until Monday,” can put a worry into a category of “nothing to worry about now.”
#5 – Meditation
Meditating is definitely a great way of overcoming anxiety. If you don’t want have the time for more involved meditation, try this: just close your eyes, let the tension out of your body and take several deep breaths through your nose. Just watch your breath going in and then out. Five minutes each day is wonderful anxiety treatment, and will go a long way towards overcoming anxiety.
